Ayurveda has discussed diabetes in depth thousands of years ago. The knowledge and efficiency of such studies can be understood by the fact that ayurveda has classified diabetes into 20 different categories and there are ayurvedic products for Type 1 and Type 2 conditions as adjuvant therapy. Diabetes is considered to have occurred towing to elevated Vata. The other important cause of diabetes is impaired function of the digestive system. Impaired digestion leads to accumulation of toxins in the pancreas. Ayurveda doesn’t regard diabetes as just a disease but it is considered as a Maha rog (Major disease) as it effects almost every organ of the body and if not treated on time can lead to severe complications.
Ayurvedic aims at restoring balance of the body and normal functioning of dhatus (tissues). Restriction in diet along with increased activity is considered sufficient at early phase of diabetes, but for later phase ayurveda suggests restriction in diet and increased activity.
